Mental Health Disorders

We offer integrated, holistic, customized treatment programs for the treatment for most mental health disorders, including, but not limited to:
When an individual with a substance use disorder is also diagnosed with a mental health disorder, they have co-occurring disorders and receive a dual diagnosis. If you or a loved need compassionate, evidence-based treatment for co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders, call us today.

Mental Health Disorders and Substance Use Disorders: Co-Occurring Disorders (COD)

The latest data from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) show that in 2020, seventeen million adults in the U.S. had co-occurring disorders. That number has almost doubled since 2018, when just over nine million adults in the U.S. reported dual diagnosis.

Here’s what the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) says about co-occurring disorders:

“People with SUDs are more likely than those without SUDs to have co-occurring mental disorders.

Addiction counselors encounter clients with CODs as a rule, not an exception. The presence of two or more disorders can complicate diagnosis and treatment. Integrating both screening and treatment for mental and substance use disorders leads to a better quality of care and health outcomes for those living with co-occurring disorders by treating the whole person.”

Our expert clinicians can support people with most mild and severe mental health symptoms, with minor exceptions. Our therapists have decades of combined experience with the integrated treatment model for dual diagnosis. Evidence shows that when a person has co-occurring disorders, treating one disorder without treating the other can impede treatment progress, and in some cases, can exacerbate the symptoms of both disorders.

Evidence-Based Therapy

Integrated treatment means addressing both disorders simultaneously.

We have extensive experience treating co-occurring disorders with the integrated treatment model. The benefits of integrated treatment include:

  • Reduced/discontinued alcohol and/or substance use
  • Improved psychiatric symptoms
  • Improved psychiatric functioning
  • Increased likelihood of positive outcomes for both disorders
  • Improved quality of life
  • Decreased hospitalization for mental health disorder
  • Decreased hospitalization for substance use disorder

The first step in creating a customized, integrated treatment plan for COD is an accurate diagnosis. That can be complicated, because sometimes the symptoms of withdrawal from a substance of misuse mirrors the symptoms of a mental health disorder, and vice-versa.

Comprehensive Assessment: We Screen for Mental Health Disorders

When you commit to recovery at kathy ireland® Recovery Centers, experienced clinicians conduct a thorough prescreen and comprehensive assessment to help design an effective treatment plan for your individual needs. A significant part of the screening process involves addressing any diagnosed or undiagnosed mental health disorders.

The presence of a co-occurring disorder at the time of your comprehensive assessment will influence the components of your treatment plan. We take the time to learn the specifics of your substance use and mental health disorder and craft your plan to ensure we offer appropriate therapeutic techniques at the appropriate time. Treatment approaches effective for a person with a history of trauma may not be effective for a person without a history of trauma. Medication that works for one disorder may not work for another. Complementary supports like yoga resonate with some people, but not others. Whatever the case and whatever your specific situation, we find the right combination of treatment components to give you the best chance of treatment success.

That all starts with your assessment.

    • Frequency of use
    • Duration of use

When we have all that information, we start building your plan. The most important part of the process is you. It’s adaptable, responsive, and designed to meet your ongoing – and evolving – treatment needs.

Our Treatment and Therapy Options:
